Blogtober14 Day 14: funniest childhood memory

Day 14 – I can’t believe I’ve lasted two weeks already! I also can’t believe October is already half over. So depressing.

The good news is that today’s prompt is “Your funniest childhood memory”. At first I couldn’t think of just one because my childhood was a really good time. Especially with my family. Finally, I chose this one because it still makes me smile. I’m actually grinning like an idiot just thinking about what to write.

When I was about 10 years old my parents took me and three of my cousins to our summer-house in New Jersey. We’re all pretty close in age which, when you’re a kid, means one of two things – you either hate each other or you’re best friends. Being the exception to that rule, we were best friends until we hated each other and then best friends again. One morning, after breakfast, we wanted to play a game. It was decided that we play the Disney Trivia Game since we all had an equal shot at doing well. The four of us sat around the table, playing nicely. Everything was great, the game was moving along. It was my cousin Nicole’s turn so she rolled the die, moved her Mickey head and waited. My cousin Desiree, chose a card to read from. She showed Nikki the picture on the front and read, “What is my name?” The answer was Nala (of Lion King fame). Nikki just stared and stared at the card. Her sister, Jillian and I cheered her on, “Come on, Nick! Who is it? You know this!” All of a sudden, Nikki throws her hands in the air and announces “I DON’T KNOW THIS QUESTION!” and falls, with her head buried in her arms on top of the table.

Stunned, Jill, Desi, and I stopped dead. We didn’t know if she was buying time or if she really didn’t know the answer. We couldn’t believe that she didn’t know the answer since we all watched the movie hundreds of times, knew most of the words and, at one point or another, probably crawled around pretending to be Simba, Nala, Mufasa, and/ or Scar. She lifted her head and we saw that she was crying. Nikki is the baby of the family so being her wonderful, thoughtful older cousins and sister that we were (are), we immediately started making fun of her. “How do you not know the answer? You love this movie! Do you want a hint?” I guess my mom made tell her who it was and eventually the game moved on, but for the rest of the day all you heard from one of us, the wonderful, thoughtful older cousins and sister, was “I DON’T KNOW THIS QUESTION!” with our hands thrown up in the air. Who am I kidding? Even now, almost 20 years later, one of us will work it into casual conversation – with a little less arm flailing. As a matter of fact, we were all at my uncle’s birthday party this weekend and I can’t remember what was going on, maybe we we’re assembling ourselves for a picture? Heaven knows I can’t remember anything anymore. Anyway, everyone was talking at once and things got a little nuts (as per usual), I looked over at my cousin Desiree and when our eyes met she started to laugh and announced “I DON’T KNOW THIS QUESTION!” Maybe you just had to be there.

Also, the reason why I made Desi’s name a link is because she entered a contest to win her dream job. Go ahead and click her name and give her a vote! It takes less than 5 minutes and you can do it once a day, all you need is a valid email. So come back and vote again tomorrow too!¬†pleaseandthankyou.
