keeping up with martina

*insert same sorry i’ve abandoned this space again greeting*

*insert next sentence about how i didn’t mean to be away this long but life got in the way and time just moves so fast when you’re an adult (or an “adult”)*

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, I know I’ve been quiet here lately and the truth is, there’s lots of stuff I want to talk about but it’s hard to write when everytime you sit down to put fingers to keyboard, you wind up instead falling down some Youtube hole and then falling asleep with your laptop on your chest. To try to combat this, I’ve dusted removed all of the clean-ish clothes from “The Chair” (you know the one) and fired up my regular old desktop computer. It feels like 2014 and I kind of like it.

It’s funny because unlike past disappearances, I DO have some ideas for posts. I just can’t seem to get myself into a routine. They’ll come. I think as long as my desktop doesn’t get any slower, the solution might be to kick it old school. At least I won’t fall asleep.

So, what have I been up to? What’s new and exciting?

Um, I have purple hair now. Ok, purple ombre hair. I’m in love. I’m so scared it’s going to fade that I made a whole wash schedule and bought some high powered color safe sulfate free shampoo, conditioner, and treatment. I’ve gotten a glimpse of parenthood and it is exhausting. Every time I rinse and see the purple puddle near the drain, my heart breaks a little. Wanna see a pic? Like it or not, here it is.

This is from when it was at its freshest. It looks best when it’s curled, otherwise, it looks flat on top, poofy at the bottom and 9.5 times out of 10, is super oily.

What else?

Taylor Swift released a new record and except for the 1:30 preview iTunes offers, I haven’t had a chance to give it a good listen. From what I have heard though, the songs all sound… the same? breathy Taylor, vague dance but can’t really dance to this song beat, autotune, meh. Maybe I just hold 1989 in too high regard? Maybe because I didn’t have high (or any) expectations, my brain can’t figure out if it likes what my ears are hearing. The other reasons I haven’t given it a running chance are 1) it’s not on Spotify. (what the heck, T?) 2) I’m not allowed to listen to my own music at work so even if it was streaming, it’s not like I have that option. There’s a part of me, a very, very small part, that wishes T would write about things that aren’t boys and feuds. However, what kind of world would it be of T. Swift didn’t write/sing about those things. Leave the battlecries to the pros, like Gaga or Pink.

Niall Horan also released an album that I haven’t had the chance to really dissect yet. I loved his first two singles and had high hopes for this album. Like, really high hopes. I thought this was the album I wished Harry Styles would have released. But then I listened to 85% of it and meh. I’m not sold. I need time to really sit down and bombard myself with both albums. That’s what I did when Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran came out with new music and it made me really appreciate it.

Speaking of Spotify, really, quick, WHY CAN’T I DOWNLOAD MY PLAYLISTS ON TO MY iPOD? Yea, I still use my iPod, whatever. I’d rather use the storage on my phone for pictures and text messages so downloading music on m phone is just not going to happen. However, I have a perfectly good iPod that I haven’t updated in forever because why would I pay for the music I listen to for free on Spotify? Even if I paid for Premium, I can’t transfer my offline playlists into iTunes. They’re protected and don’t download as mP3 files, apparently. Whatever. Someone needs to get it together because I don’t want to use all of my data just to listen to a little One Direction.

I finally saw Wicked on Broadway last weekend. OH. MY. GOD. such a good show. First of all, Jackie Burns as Elphaba, was AMAZING. Her voice blew us all away. She sounded (to me) just like Idina Menzel (if not better), who originated the role. Second, there was some high-level star power on stage. From one O-Town to the next, Ashely Parker Angel (!). What a surprise! A boy band lover’s dream! I was looking at the Playbill over my cousin’s shoulder and I exclaimed OH EM GEE! Ashley Parker Angel is in this?! To which my (23-year-old cousin) replied, “Who? How do you know him?” I gave her a good *sideeyeemoji *and replied “I’m old, ok? That’s how I know who he is.” There was talk a few years ago that they were going to make Wicked into a movie and Harry Styles was being considered for the role of Fiyero and after seeing APA do it, I can’t wait to see if that comes true.

On a sad note, The Mindy Project’s run has come to an end. I haven’t really processed this and I’m sure come next Tuesday I’ll be looking for a new episode. I really liked the finale, can’t say I loved it though. I wish Leo would have been in it since Mindy fought Danny so hard that she can be a working mom but on top of that a good mom. I loved Morgan and Tamra’s wedding. So perf. I realize now (literally, as I write this) that Mindy and Danny’s story essentially came full circle, but do I wish it happened elsewhere? Yea, I kind of do. Like, maybe in her office. Also, the whole time Mindy was riding the bike, I kept thinking “I’m Saaaandra Bullock”. Missed opportunity, if you ask me (I get that circumstances were different, but… whatever).

There’s a new ULTA in my mall. So that’s.. dangerous. The mall is walking distance from my house. GOD BLESS.

I want to give this space a makeover. GIVE ME STRENGTH. Any way of doing this on the cheap and stress-free? Etsy? Google?

I think that’s it for now. You’re all caught up with my wild life. What’s going on with you? Thoughts about the Mindy finale?

I’ll be back soon, promise. For real this time.

Mindy, Etsy and Taylor Swift

How come during the week Friday seems like it will never get here and then it comes and it’s like “woah, Friday already?” Maybe its just me. My work schedule sucks. Anyway, I haven’t done a Friday Five Favorites whatever in a while so I figured, even though nothing I have to say goes with each other, why not? I’ll make it work.

Guys, it’s September. You know what that means? MINDY COMES BACK THIS MONTH! And Hulu is now offering a no commercial option. All is right with the world. Also, full disclosure, I chose this picture because I love Mindy’s lipstick color. Now that that’s out in the open… mindy-project-season-4-facebefore i continue i just wanted to make a note. from this post forward i am going to link whatever picture, gif, meme, etc. to the page where i found it. unless it’s mine (something i made or photographed). then you’ll just have to ask for it.

2. I went to the city yesterday with Lisa. I brought my camera, of course, so there will be a post of pictures soon. Maybe. I still have to go through them. Anyway, we were walking around and I was holding my camera like I always do, one arm supporting the neck and the other under the butt. HA!

knee slapper

I really crack myself up. Anywhoo… I was holding my camera like I always do, with the strap bunched up in the hand that is underneath the camera. Ever since crossbody bags became cool again, I haven’t used anything else. I love having my hands free when I can so carrying my camera is a little awkward for me. I’m always paranoid that either I’ll drop it or someone will try to snatch it. This is New York, after all. At one point, Lisa asked me why I don’t use the camera strap. Here’s the deal. I tried to use it once and the strap opened and the camera fell right off. Thank God it landed in a pile of sand (I mean, if it had to fall, I’d rather it was on sand than concrete.) Since then, the strap has been there just for show. When I got home, I went on to Etsy and searched camera straps and, as usual, Etsy did not disappoint. Behold the scarf camera strap:

This one is, by far, my favorite. They have ones that are more neutral too, if that’s your style. Maybe I’ll get two so that I’m covered for every occasion. Some shops also have wrist straps. I need a few of those too. I just need them all.

3. Speaking of Etsy, I stumbled across stylishpetite on Instagram. She posted this picture and I immediately wanted, well, everything in the photo but I would settle for just the mug.

I went to her blog and found the post, which led me right to this Etsy shop. I’m in love with everything. And! They offer a left-handed option for the coffee mugs! Hallelujah! How many times have I found a great mug only to have to put it down because the sentiment would always face me instead of out? #leftyproblems Not many, but still, this is a big deal. #ihavenolife. Anyone want to get me a late birthday gift? Early Christmas gift? Favorite blogger gift? I accept gifts for any reason.

4.. Taylor Swift released her music video for “Wildest Dreams” last week at the VMAs. The show was over 2 hours of absolute fuckery, but this video was not. First, Scott Eastwood. Mama like. Second, 1950’s Hollywood glam. Taylor has been getting a lot of shit for the premise of her video, some even calling her racist. I think, and I’ve said this before, people today are throwing that word around too freely and are looking too far into things that aren’t there. But that’s for a different post. Third and finally, she donated the proceeds from the video to the African Parks Foundation of America for wildlife conservation. It doesn’t make her a saint, but at least she’s not wearing Mufasa on her back. Ok, enough of that, let’s all drool over Scott Eastwood.

5. If I’m not watching Taylor and Scott, my other Youtube obsession is planner videos. I really don’t know why. I have banned myself from buying a planner because I know for a fact I will fall deep in to the rabbit hole of stickers and pens and washi tape. oh my! Then I’ll get depressed because I have nothing to plan. It’s probably not healthy, but I’ll just stick with living vicariously through the people of Youtube. Meanwhile, I don’t know how long that will last because I have already fallen in love with the Ban.do agenda for 2016. jesus take the wheel.

That’s about it. That’s five, right? I’m not good with the math. Hope you have a great Labor Day weekend!

smorgasburg, street art & taylor swift

In a turn of events, I actually did things this weekend so here I am to tell you all about them. Not surprisingly though, those events include going to the city to take lots and lots of pictures. Whatever. I had a good time.

Friday: Lisa invited me to go out to with her and her coworkers to Smorgasburg in Coney Island. Smorgasburg is like a higher end food truck rally. The one in Coney Island (they’re all over Brooklyn and now going into Queens) had their vendors set up in shipping crates. It’s also fairly new to the area so there was a much smaller selection of vendors. I persevered though and got a delicious lobster roll from the Red Hook Lobster Company and a lemonade. We also shared truffle fries with a lemon garlic aioli that I would like to bathe in. After we ate, we went for drinks on the boardwalk and took in the view.

After drinks we said our goodbyes and made our way home. I put Mindy on Hulu and started an unofficial countdown until the new season starts. (21, by the time you’re reading this!)

Saturday: I’ve been stalking “The Love Wall” on Instagram for a while now so Lisa and I decided to take the trip. It was supposed  to be on the corner of Mott Street in Little Italy. Tell me how all of a sudden it’s in the Bowery.

Guys, they moved the love wall and Google said NOTHING.

I’ve been googling the wall for the last few days just to make sure that we knew how to get there and what else was in the area for us to do so you would think I’d know that it up and moved. Nope. The Bowery isn’t too far from where we were and I think that’s what makes it worse. Like, we could have went if we had known but GOOGLE DROPPED THE BALL. The mural that replaced the original love wall is great and has a good message so at least there’s that.

Mulberry Street was closed to traffic which made it like a typical New York Italian street fair minus the zeppolis and sausage and peppers. We had lunch at La Mela, which was cheap and delicious. Then we found the Italian American museum, which I’ve been wanting to go to for a while now. Little Italy was one of the first places the Italian immigrants landed when they came over. The Stabile bank, where the museum is housed, was everything to these people. They went there to apply for jobs, wire money home, arrange for the rest of their family to come over. The building is the last original one of these buildings left. I loved that they kept it true to a bank, setting up the exhibits in the bank teller stations and opening the vault to show all of the receipts, mail and whatever else was left in there. They were also hosting a photo exhibit by a photographer named Steve Nadler. He did a who series of Little Italy over the course of the year in 1976. I absolutely loved it. Mr. Nadler was there and very open to talk about his work and a little of his life. It turns out that he and his wife had their first apartment in the same neighborhood where I live now. Such a small world. Anyway, the exhibit is there until Labor Day and he’s there every Saturday so if you can go, GO! In fact, let me know and I’ll go with you. Then we’ll go and find the love wall, for the love of God.

After the museum I needed a small hit of sugar so we went into Ferrara’s bakery for some cannoli. I decided on a mini chocolate one and for once in my life, it was a good decision.

The rest of the day was basically walking and finding all sorts of street art. It’s all over down there, just like the tourists. Everyone complains that Times Square is a tourist trap has obviously never spent time in Chinatown. Don’t get me wrong, I love tourists. I love listening to them speak and hearing the awe in their voices when they see the Empire State Building for the first time. I love giving directions to places I’ve been to a million times. I love knowing that they’ll go back to whatever state/country they came from and talk about their trip to New York ad nauseum. So yea, tourists for the win. Anyway, street art- lots of it.

Getting back to the love wall for a second, my intention was to take artsy, too cool to look at the camera, typical blogger photos in front of it. Luckily, we found other walls to do that in front of so at least the day wasn’t a waste. As if we did nothing else all day.

We walked around until we found ourselves in TriBeCa. We stopped by Taylor Swift’s apartment building to see if she wanted to get a cup of coffee and gossip but she’s on tour so I guess we’ll have to take a raincheck. We both agreed though that if we met her the one question we would have to ask is what it was like dating Harry Styles. (sidenote: this is why Lisa is my best friend. she brought up the question just as i was thinking it. #greatminds) We would promise that we wouldn’t sell her story or anything, we just have to know. Let’s be real, if you caught her coming out of her building and she gave you a minute of her time, after you told her how much you love/hate/whatever her, you wouldn’t ask the same thing? Exactly.

After we left Taylor’s, we headed over to One World Trade. We were too broke to go up to the Observatory this time but I’ll get up there eventually. Also, I’m saving those pictures for another post so look out for them soon!

When we got home my feet wanted nothing to do with walking so I drove myself for some pizza and then watched The Devil Wears Prada with Nicole.

That is all. (ha! get it?)

What did you do this weekend?

Let’s discuss!

photo dump: flatiron to fifth avenue

What do you get when you mix two single gals, New York City and a camera?

The other night, Lisa and I found ourselves venturing into the city. Our plan was to get soup and then frozen yogurt. And, in case you were wondering, yes, we were fully aware that it was 90 degrees and humid out. We even had a conversation about how making good decisions is not on our list of marketable skills. But really, when Tomato Cheddar is soup of the month, the bad decision would be not to get the soup.

We got off at 14th Street/ Union Square and headed off to find soup nirvana. We noticed a group of fire engines on the block of the soup place.

Lisa: Oh, that’s definitely Hale and Hearty.

Me: No it can’t be.

Lisa: Totally is.

We get closer and we notice that the fire department set up caution tape right in front of the soup place.

Lisa: I told you it was Hale and Hearty.

Me: Ugh.

For a brief second I contemplated hopping the caution tape and getting the soup anyway. Then I realized that my foot would 100% get stuck and New York City’s Bravest (and hottest, if you ask me) would get to watch me eat the pavement. not a good look.

It turns out that there was falling debris from the top of the building. As far as I know, no one was hurt except me and Lisa because we were denied our beloved Tomato Cheddar.

After dinner we took a walk over to the Flatiron Building. From there, our excellent decision making skills kicked in again and we started to walk to Rockefeller Center. Just for a point of reference, the Flatiron is on 23rd Street and Rockefeller is on 45th. You do the math, because we didn’t.

We tried to get a cupcake and a cup of coffee before we headed home, as per usual, but Crumbs had the nerve to be in the process of closing for the night. I mean, what is this? Don’t they know that there’s a possibility that two psychos from Brooklyn may need a sugar fix at 10pm? city that never sleeps, my ass.

As I was going through the pictures I took I was thinking that if Taylor Swift needs some assistance in her role as New York City’s Ambassador, maybe Lisa and I could help. Sooo… Taylor, if the pressures of the job get to be too much, just know that we gladly volunteer to lend a hand. Just as long as Lisa gets to play with Olivia and Meredith and I get to meet Harry Styles. Or Ed Sheeran, at least. It’s up to you, just let us know.

post blogtober list of things

It’s only been two days since blogtober finished and I already miss posting everyday. It’s just that I don’t know what to write about; how to proceed. It was great having those prompts everyday so I didn’t have to think of a topic. They were just there for me to shape them as I saw fit. The thing is, I don’t want to have a blog full of prompts. I want to write about something new and exciting every time I decide to post. Except that I am not new or exciting. For example, right now I’m stuck at work. It’s Sunday, so it’s quiet. As it was yesterday when I was here also. I have had a headache since I woke up this morning and I want to be home in bed watching the Girl Code marathon that I found just before I had to leave (of course). I don’t feel funny or entertaining; just cold and slightly annoyed. And a little bit bored hungry. You know, when you’re bored so you think it’s cool to eat everything in sight? Yea. I’m at that point.

However, being a Negative Nancy is worse than not writing at all, in my opinion, so I’ve decided to make a list of things. Things that I’m looking forward to, things that are making me happy at the moment. THINGS.

First and foremost, The Mindy Project comes back on Tuesday. hallelujah. I can’t wait. I probably shouldn’t admit the amount of withdrawal I went through for the past two weeks (because it’s embarrassing), but let me tell you, it wasn’t pretty. Anyway, Mindy and Danny are back and all is right with the (my) world. (and just to be really annoying about things: #fullseasonformindy – just in case that’s still a thing)

Speaking of comebacks, the paisans we all know and love are making a return to television! That’s right, kids – Growing Up Gotti is back!  Actually, A&E is doing a sort of “where are they now” special but still, I’ve waited almost 10 years for it. (again, saying too much) Is there hope for a new series or a DVD release? I sure hope so! (note: i am fully aware that i need a life. christmas is coming; maybe there will finally be one under the tree.)

i feel no guilt in this pleasure

The day before Halloween I found myself in Target. Before I knew what was happening, I had the new Taylor Swift CD in my cart. (#TS1989) Shortly thereafter, I was paying for the new Taylor Swift CD and taking it home. Must have been that Target Trance that we all know so well. I’m not the biggest Taylor Swift fan but I do enjoy some Harry Styles and any chance I get to hear about him what goes on behind his closed doors, I’m taking it. There’s been some speculation as to which songs are about him on this album. I’m not going to take any guesses but I could tell you two songs that I definitely hope are about him. Wildest Dreams and Out of the Woods. (i tried to include a video for wildest dreams here but youtube has been deleting the audio from them to protect the rights.rude. so if the video below doesn’t work try previewing them on itunes.)

After Target I wound up in Ulta, where I found a nail stamping kit from Essence. I’ve been looking for one for a while now because I can paint my nails but decorating them is another story. I finally got a chance to open the kit last night and play around with it. It’s a simple concept- paint the stencil and even out the paint, stamp the picture on the stamper, roll on to your nail, repeat. Tell me why I could not, for the life of me, get it to work. Anyway, I ordered some other stencil plates from Born Pretty Store and hopefully I’ll get my technique down before they come. If anyone has any experience with this stuff, let me in on your secrets in the comments!

I guess that’s the end of my list of things. I don’t even know how to sign off anymore. I most likely will not post tomorrow so “see you tomorrow” is out. Maybe I’ll just borrow from my aunt’s answering machine and leave it at:

Ciao for now!
