New York

weekend update: oldest bridesmaid, reporting for duty.

Helloooo! It’s Tuesday, which means I’m finally getting around to writing my weekend update post. I have no excuse as to why it was late again except that I’m old and needed to recover.

I had off on Thursday because of Rosh Hashana (sidenote: september is officially my new favorite month. i get off for labor day and two Jewish holidays, so long as they fall on a weekday. amazing.) so I took that opportunity to get my nails done for my cousin’s wedding on Saturday. I’ll just consider that the start of wedding weekend.

Friday I went back to work and the day dragged unbelievably. Like last week, I can’t remember what happened Friday night. I had tentative plans with Lisa and Jessica but we decided to reschedule, so I assume it was spent on the couch.

Saturday was the big day. I was up bright and early to go with Desiree to get our hair and makeup done and then head over to my aunt’s house for pictures. Honestly, this is my favorite part of weddings. Walking into a salon looking like what the cat dragged in and walking out looking like the cat’s pajamas.

After we were painted and pinned, we headed off to Queens to get dressed and take pictures with the bride and her other bridesmaids. There was also talk of bagels and mimosas and we all know how I feel about both of those things.

20170923_123311(0)20170923_123426_00120170923_123353

The rest of the girls got to the house and we were finally ready to get dressed and take some pictures. Let me tell you, I can’t wait to look at every single picture from that day. The photographer(s) were amazing.

Speaking of amazing, look at my cousin.

20170923_13543620170923_135531

I guess that I should explain that Jill is very plain Jane. We joke that her favorite color is beige. She’s not into frills and frou-frou. Doesn’t gravitate towards bling. A little weird, if you ask me. When she walked out I was floored. Maybe I’m biased (I’m not), but isn’t she stunning?

We took about 86386 more pictures and then we piled into the limo and were on our way to the venue.

Speaking of pictures, I have to note, because this is a big deal for me, this is the first time that I’ve been to a big event and 90% of the pictures I took were on my phone. I had my mom bring my little point and shoot camera so that she could take some pictures of the ceremony and so that I had it for the reception but it died right after we were announced. So, not ideal, but thankfully, it’s 2017 and phone cameras don’t (totally) suck.

At the venue, we took even more pictures (I was in my glory, don’t let me fool you) and then the bride and groom did their first look. I used to think it was cheesy, but I’ve warmed up to it. Except then I think of when Will and Kate got married and Harry snuck a peek at Kate walking down the aisle, and he said to Will, “wait till you see her”, and I kind of love that even more.

ugh. amirite?

Finally, FINALLY it was time for these two crazy kids to tie the knot.

My mother didn’t do the best job at documenting so this is all I’m working with.

I don’t have to tell you what happens after the bride and groom are pronounced husband and wife, right? EVERYBODY GETS TO EAT. GOD BLESS.

We ate, we drank (boy, did we draank) and we danced like maniacs. There was a particularly rousing rendition of “I Want It That Way” that is still giving me life. There was a Disney montage, that caused me to scream across the room at the bride that this was the best wedding ever!

I’m a real gem.

Oh yea, and I caught the bouquet.

(no pictures, yet. i’ll have to troll facebook)

This is going to be some wedding video.

I’ll end it here and leave you with a few more pictures of me and my favorite nutjobs.

Sunday I came home, took my hair down, a nap and many Advil. And this my friends, is how the oldest bridesmaid ends her wedding weekend.

Anyway….

I’M HOME!

San Francisco was amazing. I already want to go back. who’s coming with me?

Check back for pictures and recommendations. Just give me a few days because 1) I have to do some editing #fortheblog and 2) I’m convinced I have a touch of tonsillitis, but that’s a story for another time.

Also, if anyone has any tricks on how to unclog their ears after a plane ride, SEND THEM MY WAY. I’m strugglin’ here.

See you in a few!

snow my God! a weekend recap

Monday, we meet again. I was on the fence about doing a weekend recap since all I did was wait for the snow, watch the snow, and then wish the snow would go away. But, for the sake of posterity, I decided to do one anyway.

Friday I had plans to go to Jessica’s, but Jonas had other ideas. The storm was supposed to start at 3 am Saturday morning. Then, while I was at the Post Office, I made some new friends who told me that they heard it was now supposed to begin between 12 and 2 am. Whatever, I’ll be home in plenty of time either way. My roommates parents had the news on all night and were, quite frankly, driving me nuts about it all. We’re supposed to get 6-12 inches, how bad could it be? The worst will be overnight. I’ll be fine. That’s what I kept saying. When I got the “do you want to reschedule?” text I decided to stay home and see what this storm was all about.

Jonas landed at about 9:30 pm Friday night and pounded right on through midnight Saturday night (technically Sunday morning). christ.

jonas2016_WM

Saturday I was supposed to go out for Lisa’s birthday but with the snow falling at 3 inches an hour and winds upwards of 45-50mph, she decided to reschedule. good choice. Instead, Nicole came over and we watched Hotel Transylvania 2 and The Intern.

To pad this post a little, I’ll give my thoughts on both movies. HT2 was OK, but I think the commercials made it seem much funnier than it was. Pretty disappointing. The Intern was great. I loved it! Robert DeNiro was the cutest little old(er) man. He made me so sad but in a good way. A mischina, if you will. (mish-keen: an italian slang term usually meaning “what a pity”.) I don’t know why Anne Hathaway gets all the hate she does because she’s perfect for these roles. I hate to typecast actors but if she could pull a Kate Hudson and mostly do these kinds of movies for the rest of her career, I’d be very happy.

Sunday consisted of me helping my mom shovel the car out and make a path for our garbage cans. People who know me that may (or may not) read this are probably calling bullshit because I HATE the snow. Shoveling it, walking in it,hearing about it, ALL OF IT. But I did! I shoveled! Like a big girl!

blizzard2016_WM

I heard my neighbor mention that her ruler was reading 30.5 inches. Officially, the weather people keep saying that this was the second biggest storm in NYC’s history. We missed tying for first place by .10 of an inch. Unofficially, that is a shit ton of snow.

Either way, there’s always time for some selfies. Or some snowfies!

That’s my “how can something so sparkly be such a problem?” face.

After shoveling and selfie-ing, I came inside with every intention of reading, but I wound up getting a call from a nap that I just had to answer.

giphy (3)

And that’s about it. Now it’s all about figuring out how to live in a snowglobe. Thank God it’s suppposed to be almost 45 degrees with some chance of rain by Tuesday.

HURRY UP, SUMMER.

What did you do this weekend? We’re you snowed in?

Let’s discuss!

sweater weather tag! (totally not the candle)

The other night I was scouring the internet for something, anything to inspire me. I was in my usual funk of I have things to say but don’t know what to write. I went through all of the writing prompts on Pinterest, tried to come up with a witty list, possibly entitled 20 Things To Do When You’re Home Alone That Doesn’t Involve Hulu or Netflix. Except, what is there to do besides catching up on Hulu and Netflix when you have the TV to yourself? I was about to give up when I clicked the refresh button on my Reader. Up popped a new post from Kristen over at Peaches and Poppycock. It was a tag! And she tagged me! ask and you shall receive. So, thanks Kristen! She put a limit on her word count, but you guys aren’t getting that lucky with mine.

So, without further ado:

favorite candle scentLeaves by Bath and Body Works or Home Sweet Home by Scentsationals (you can get it at Walmart. it’s actually those wax cubes for the tart warmers. wax that smells good = candle)

coffee, tea or hot chocolate?  first of all, if i’m drinking coffee, it’s iced. second, I like all of those beverages so it just depends on my mood.

what is the best fall memory you have — i don’t really have one. early fall usually reminds me of school and sometimes i forget how old i am and i start to look for my backpack to get my homework started. old habits die hard, i guess. honestly, the only other thing that comes to mind is doing blogtober last year. i really loved that challenge (and a challenge it was!) and all of the people i’ve “met”/found because of it.

best fragrance for fall — Chloe by Chloe or Burberry Body

favorite Thanksgiving food — Stove Top stuffing. sorry, i’m just not a fan of the homemade ones. my aunt also makes this corn bread/pudding thing that i would eat the whole pan of if i could.

most worn sweater —  i don’t wear a lot of sweaters because i’m always warm.

football games or jumping in leaf piles — ohh tough choice. i’m going to go with football games. we all know i feel about men in uniform.

favorite type of pie —  apple or cherry, both with vanilla ice cream.

what is autumn weather like where you live — gorgeous. and the views aren’t bad either.

which makeup trend do you prefer: dark lips or winged liner — dark lips, hands down.

what song really gets you into the fall spirit —  the monster mash?

is pumpkin spice worth the hype — it used to be and then starbucks thought it would be cute to release it in august. then dunkin donuts, for some reason, decided not to release their apple cider. NOT COOL. how else are we supposed to fight against the great pumpkin (spice)?

giphy (5)

favorite fall TV show —  does “You’ve Got Mail” airing on ABC Family (or wherever) count?

skinny jeans or leggings? — leggings if i could find a long enough, light enough sweater or tunic. otherwise, skinny jeans. who am i kidding? elastic waistband for the win.

combat boots or Uggs — gun to my head? Uggs. but really, riding boots.

Halloween: yay or nay — nay. or should i say nae nae?

giphy (4)

fall mornings or evenings — do i have to choose?

what do you think about Black Friday? — it’s cool, but no thanks. too many people, too much pressure. i think it’s bullshit that stores are not giving their employees a chance to enjoy the holiday. opening at 6pm on thursday? by that time, my pants are still buttoned and i’m not looking for the fennel to help me to digest yet. #italiansolutions. i mean, what kind of shit is that?

one Fall 2015 trend you love — blanket scarves #baaaasicccc

Now for the tagging.

I tag:
Libby @ Honestly, Libby
Mallory @ Mallory Can’t Even
Laura @ Life with Lolo
Allison @ AA
Anyone who wants to do this. Really! Feel free.

Can’t wait to see everyone’s answers! Just make sure you tag me or leave a comment or whatevs.

Later gators!

flowers minus the allergies!

I didn’t really have a post planned (do I ever?), but since it’s been a sad last couple of days in New York, I thought that I’d share my happy flower pictures from my trip to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens this past weekend.

sorry, meg. no daisies.

sorry, meg. no daisies.

wish there were daisies. There were lots of cherry blossoms and tulips and trees. tons and tons of trees. But alas, no daisies. I think next time I’ll do more research to see what’s in season, but you don’t care about that. I get it. Ok, no more talking.

We found the rose garden, which of course, was not in bloom. just my luck. It did have a perfect place to pose for pictures. I call this my “if i had the sweet sixteen i wanted, sweet sixteen” pose. Also known as the “if i get married before i’m 90, wedding” pose.

Then we walked over to the library and Grand Army Plaza. I used to pass them everyday when I went to school. I always wanted to get off the bus and wander around but I never did. Because I had papers to write and also, I’m lazy.

Then we went to a Vietnamese restaurant in Brooklyn Heights, where I had my first banh mi sandwich. I don’t know what took me so long. I’m trying to figure out how to have one at least once a day, everyday.

I’d like to say that when I got home I did more than read on the couch but I didn’t. Because again, I’m lazy.

I mentioned that it’s been a sad couple of days here in New York. So, in light of recent events, I just wanted to add this here.

thank you for doing a job that I could never do.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” (Matthew 5:9)

What’s your favorite flower? Have you experienced the magic that is banh mi?

book talk!

No matter how many times she entered it, Dolly never lost her sense of awe at the sheer majesty of Central Park. To her it was like its own city within a city, or perhaps more of a kingdom, the kind of place where there should be a castle in the middle, complete with a moat and drawbridge and a turret soaring to the clouds with a pretty lady fair peeking from the window.

-“Searching for Grace Kelly” by Michael Callahan

I mean, there is a castle in Central Park, but no moats, drawbridges or ladies fair. Central Park is quite magical, though. It’s like those elusive “traveling pants” whenever you step in, it’s a perfect fit.

I recommended this book when I was halfway through and now that I’m finished I’ll recommend it again. If you’re looking for old New York glamour, pick this one up!

I know I asked a few days ago but, read any good books lately? Have you read this gem?

It’s Christmas Time Again!

With mere minutes left until Christmas (21 to be exact!), and the fact that I have been totally deficient in posting on here, I figured I should kill two birds with one stone and write something festive.

SOMETHING FESTIVE.

Ha! You had to see that one coming.

Anyway, in the spirit of the season I thought I would write about some of my favorite things. Without further ado here are

Martina’s Favorite Things : Christmas Edition

1. Miracle on 34th Street (1994)- How perfect is this movie? First of all, it’s a John Hughes production. I know, I should stop right there- but there’s more! Second, it’s set in New York (where else?) AT CHRISTMAS TIME. Third, two words – DYLAN MCDERMOTT. And finally, well two things actually, there are old fashioned taxis all over the place. Where did they come from? And can we have them back? Also, can we talk about Mrs. Walker’s ring at the end? Way to go Mr. Bedford.  One last thing (I promise!), the head of makeup for this wonderful Christmas gem was Ben Nye Jr. Perfect.

2. Rockefeller Center- Ok I know, the crowds suck. They really, really do. But that’s all the more reason to practice your New York strut. Getting through the crowds like a New Yorker doesn’t mean to push or get crazy. You have to be agile and take every open opportunity. Basically, don’t be an animal. Also keep in mind that in this case the ends will certainly justify the means.

DSC_0043

BAM!

3. Chocolate Chip Cookies – I try to make them every year. Then I try not to eat them all.

4. My Christmas tree – A few years ago I challenged my mom to decorate our tree with only lights and bows and those sparkly stick things. To no surprise of my own, she totally skilled it. So now, we only decorate with lights and bows and sparkly stick things. Sometimes I miss our ornaments since they all had meaning but then I turn on my tree and see the whole living room light up and sparkle and it makes me happy. I could always visit the other ornaments in the basement.

20131209_181154

LOOK AT MY TREE!

4.5 Speaking of trees,

5. Like I could really limit myself to 5 things. The food, the friends and family. My aunt’s cookie tray, the meatballs, the manicotti, and antipasta. The sparkle, the magic. The gifts, the traditions. The movies, the songs. The Christmas specials of my favorite TV shows. The Hallmark Channel and Lifetime movies. The surprises, the wrapping paper. The good cheer and the warm fuzzies.  You get the idea.

It is now officially Christmas! I guess I should get to bed or else Santa won’t come. 😉

On an unrelated note before I go, does anyone know how to personalize these posts? I just learned how to download fonts and would love to use them on here but I don’t know how to do that. If nothing else, is there a way to change the color of the letters? Let me know!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
