Miracle on 34th Street

movie night: christmas edition!

One of the things that I love most about the Christmas season is the movies that it produces. I haven’t been able to sit and watch any this year because for whatever reason, my attention span is nonexistent. thanks, social media. When I do get a chance to have a good old fashioned Christmas movie marathon, I definitely have my must sees. I feel like I should mention that I’ve never seen A Christmas Story and I don’t really like Elf (or Will Ferrell but that’s besides the point) gasp! So without further ado, I present Martina’s Merry Movie Marathon!

I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned this one before, but it’s just not Christmas for me without it.

1. Miracle on 34th Street (1994)

giphy (24)

This movie is downright magical. Susan gets a house, a dad and a baby brother for God sake! But seriously, it’s set in New York, natch. Its got a modern yet very vintage feel. And the lighting! Or whatever it was to make everything have some sort of diffused glow to it. Downright ethereal. I wanted to be Susan Walker. I still kind of do. She lives in an apartment on Central Park West *swoon*, she’s smart, she eventually moves to a beautiful house upstate (I’d keep the apartment for fun-sies), and SANTA CLAUSE is her BFF. Who wouldn’t want to be Susan Walker? Also, can I just say that I truly believe that the 80’s and 90’s would be a horrible time if John Hughes wasn’t around to make movies. He is sorely missed.

2. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

giphy (25)

Another Christmas in New York (in the 90s) classic. I don’t know what’s going on with Mac these days, but back then, man, I would have loved to have been his best friend. Actually, no. I probably would have been to scared with the Wet/Sticky bandits breaking into my house and then chasing me all over New York City. I did, however have a Talkboy on my wish lists for every gift giving event for at least two years. i’m still waiting, MOM. One thing that’s bothered me for years though – what time was it when Kevin’s mom found him at the tree? It is NEVER that empty. John Hughes brings that movie magic uhh-gain.

3. The Holiday

giphy (26)

This movie,to me, is criminally underrated. To be honest, I don’t really like Cameron Diaz or Jack Black so when I first saw it I didn’t have high hopes. But then my girl Kate hit us with this nugget of wisdom and I fell in love.

I’ve found almost everything ever written about love to be true. Shakespeare said “Journeys end in lovers meeting.” What an extraordinary thought. Personally, I have not experienced anything remotely close to that, but I am more than willing to believe Shakespeare had. I suppose I think about love more than anyone really should. I am constantly amazed by its sheer power to alter and define our lives. It was Shakespeare who also said “love is blind”. Now that is something I know to be true. For some quite inexplicably, love fades; for others love is simply lost. But then of course love can also be found, even if just for the night. And then, there’s another kind of love: the cruelest kind. The one that almost kills its victims. Its called unrequited love. Of that I am an expert. Most love stories are about people who fall in love with each other. But what about the rest of us? What about our stories, those of us who fall in love alone? We are the victims of the one sided affair. We are the cursed of the loved ones. We are the unloved ones, the walking wounded. The handicapped without the advantage of a great parking space! Yes, you are looking at one such individual. And I have willingly loved that man for over three miserable years! The absolute worst years of my life! The worst Christmas’, the worst Birthday’s, New Years Eve’s brought in by tears and Valium. These years that I have been in love have been the darkest days of my life. All because I’ve been cursed by being in love with a man who does not and will not love me back. Oh god, just the sight of him! Heart pounding! Throat thickening! Absolutely can’t swallow! All the usual symptoms.

We’ve all been there. We’ve all been ready to just pick up and run away for a little while. I looked into that home sharing website and then I realized that I already shared my home – with my parents. So I was going nowhere, fast. And nothing goes smoothly for my family so I’d probably get there and pull up to a vacant lot or I’d get thrown into human trafficking. Better safe than sorry.

4. The Christmas Toy

Does anyone else remember this one? Rugby, Mew, Apple and that bitch, Meteora. It’s kind of a sad, slightly inappropriate children’s movie but aren’t all of the good ones? If you don’t remember I’ll quickly give you a run down. The toys figure out that it’s Christmas Eve and that in the morning new toys will be replacing them. Rugby, who replaced Apple but conveniently forgets that fact, wants to kick Meteora out of her box so that he will be unwrapped on Christmas morning and will always be loved by his person (Jenny? Katie? I don’t remember). The only hiccup is that if a toy is seen by a person outside of the playroom, it gets frozen (it essentially dies- see? slightly inappropriate.) Eventually, Rugby, Mew and all the toys figure out that their people will always love them. Well, until they get a cellphone. Or, since it’s the late 80’s, a beeper. It’s kind of like Toy Story but with Muppets.

This list doesn’t even begin to cover all of my favorites. Others include: PeeWee’s Christmas, Ebbie, Anything on Hallmark, To Grandmother’s House We Go (who doesn’t love the Olsen twins?). Christmas at Eureeka’s Castle! The list could go on for days.

What are your favorites?

Let’s discuss!

It’s Christmas Time Again!

With mere minutes left until Christmas (21 to be exact!), and the fact that I have been totally deficient in posting on here, I figured I should kill two birds with one stone and write something festive.

SOMETHING FESTIVE.

Ha! You had to see that one coming.

Anyway, in the spirit of the season I thought I would write about some of my favorite things. Without further ado here are

Martina’s Favorite Things : Christmas Edition

1. Miracle on 34th Street (1994)- How perfect is this movie? First of all, it’s a John Hughes production. I know, I should stop right there- but there’s more! Second, it’s set in New York (where else?) AT CHRISTMAS TIME. Third, two words – DYLAN MCDERMOTT. And finally, well two things actually, there are old fashioned taxis all over the place. Where did they come from? And can we have them back? Also, can we talk about Mrs. Walker’s ring at the end? Way to go Mr. Bedford.  One last thing (I promise!), the head of makeup for this wonderful Christmas gem was Ben Nye Jr. Perfect.

2. Rockefeller Center- Ok I know, the crowds suck. They really, really do. But that’s all the more reason to practice your New York strut. Getting through the crowds like a New Yorker doesn’t mean to push or get crazy. You have to be agile and take every open opportunity. Basically, don’t be an animal. Also keep in mind that in this case the ends will certainly justify the means.

BAM!

3. Chocolate Chip Cookies – I try to make them every year. Then I try not to eat them all.

4. My Christmas tree – A few years ago I challenged my mom to decorate our tree with only lights and bows and those sparkly stick things. To no surprise of my own, she totally skilled it. So now, we only decorate with lights and bows and sparkly stick things. Sometimes I miss our ornaments since they all had meaning but then I turn on my tree and see the whole living room light up and sparkle and it makes me happy. I could always visit the other ornaments in the basement.

LOOK AT MY TREE!

4.5 Speaking of trees,

5. Like I could really limit myself to 5 things. The food, the friends and family. My aunt’s cookie tray, the meatballs, the manicotti, and antipasta. The sparkle, the magic. The gifts, the traditions. The movies, the songs. The Christmas specials of my favorite TV shows. The Hallmark Channel and Lifetime movies. The surprises, the wrapping paper. The good cheer and the warm fuzzies.  You get the idea.

It is now officially Christmas! I guess I should get to bed or else Santa won’t come. 😉

On an unrelated note before I go, does anyone know how to personalize these posts? I just learned how to download fonts and would love to use them on here but I don’t know how to do that. If nothing else, is there a way to change the color of the letters? Let me know!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
