Friday Five: movie night!

Happy Friday, friends! As I’m sure everyone is well aware, it’s getting colder out. And what goes with cold weather, besides snuggling by a warm fire because that’s hard to do by yourself. Movies. So today I’m here to talk about four movies that I’m excited for. Four? Martina, this is a Friday FIVE post. Idiot. I know, I know. I have something else to talk about for number five. Chill. coopers

Love the Coopers (November 13, or today) – I love a good Diane Keaton movie. Because I Said So, The First Wives Club, The Godfather. Big fan. This movie is about a family that comes together for their annual Christmas Eve dinner where hilarity and hijinks ensue. It looks like its going to be one of those feel good holiday movies which is fine by me. It is also coming from the makers of The Family Stone, which is also high on my list of favorites (Dermott Mulroney… yaaass, please.

The Good Dinosaur (November 25th) – Yep. I’m 28 years old and it’s a cartoon… and? I grew up loving The Land Before Time; how could I not be interested in this movie? This one is about a dinosaur and a human forming a friendship. As long as everyone’s mama stays alive, how bad could it be?

those aren’t raindrops. they’re the tears of every 90’s kid who had their heart ripped out over that damn asteroid.

Sisters (December 18th)- The last time I was at the movies, almost 150 years ago, they showed a trailer for this movie and it automatically went on my must see list. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are at it again! This time they play sisters (duh) whose parents are selling their childhood home (gasp!) so they decide to throw one more epic house party. I love, love, love Tina and Amy together.  Ike Barinholtz, of Mindy Project fame, is also in this as the “boy next door”/ Amy’s love interest (I think. I’m pretty sure.) CAN’T WAIT.

Dirty Grandpa (January 22) – Zac Efron and Robert DeNiro – yes and yes. The story is this – Zac Efron is rooked into driving his grandfather, Robert DeNiro down to Florida right before his (Zac’s) wedding. Here’s the kicker though. Zac plays an uptight preppy guy, who still looks good without a shirt and in tight pants, and Bobby plays the perverted, fun loving one. I’m just so excited to see Zac Efron not playing a douchey frat boy or DJ. Sign me up!

And finally, my last favorite. Believe me, I definitely saved the best for last.

Remember a few Mondays ago I posted a weekend recap where I went to a baby shower? Well, that baby saw how much fun we were all having and decided to make his appearance a bit early. I met him earlier in the week and oh my God I’m in love. Are you ready for this?

What movies are you looking forward to?

Let’s discuss!

Late (as usual) Friday Five!

We made it through another week! Let’s keep the good times rolling and get right into my Friday Five, shall we?

I like to change my phone case every couple of months and it’s getting to that time so I was on the hunt for a new one. Somehow I stumbled across this one and I need it. Like, right now.

ursula- PUS

Did you ever? I would have bought it right then and there but I refuse to spend $25+ on a phone case because, Amazon. #sorrynotsorry My other reasoning was that I wanted these two also and I definitely was not spending that much money on cellphone cases. I found them here, so if you want to buy me a present, feel free!

I did, however, find exactly what I was looking for (minus Ursula). wait until you see them!

After Mindy on Tuesday, I immediately logged on to Tumblr (am i too old for Tumblr? if i am, ignore that statement) because God forbid I just leave well enough alone. Anyway, I’m scrolling and reblogging, etc and I come across this gem.

SPOILERS AHEAD (i think. at least it’s fair warning.)

danny india

Is he asking for Mindy’s hand in marriage? I thought her parents lived in Boston! I mean, they just had a whole episode about how Catholic Danny is, so I think it’s safe to assume marriage is on the horizon. Ugh. Only two episodes left and I really don’t know what to do with myself.

I’m trying to keep myself occupied so I’ve bought multiple books to get through the hiatus. Right now I’m reading “Searching for Grace Kelly” by Michael Callahan.

searching for grace kelly

It’s set in the mid 1950’s New York City. It’s about the girls at the Barbizon Hotel. The hotel was THE place for glamorous women to stay/live while in New York. The book is dripping with glamour. It makes me want to be there. I think I was a Barbizon Girl in my past life because, obviously, I am the epitome of class, grace, culture and all around refinement.

I’m only about halfway through but I would definitely recommend it.

I use Spotify at work, when I could get on a computer. I feel like it’s more personalized than Pandora and it has a ton to choose from. I made a playlist of all songs I used to love in high school. I don’t know who I thought I was back then. I have a little dance, a little R&B, and a LOT of rap. Missy Elliott, Jagged Edge, Biggie, Cascada, Deborah Cox, Angelo Venuto (if you had a sweet 16 and didn’t play him, your party was lame. what else are brooklyn gweeds supposed to beat the beat to? #sorrynotsorry ). So, I’ve been busy dancing down memory lane.

Since my life isn’t all that exciting, I’m going to make the last item some Friday funnies.

I guess that’s it. Have you read any good books lately? Any ideas on what Danny is doing in India?

Let’s discuss!

Broadway or bust

Call me stereotypical but I am a big Disney fan.

Fun Fact: I can recite The Little Mermaid word for word – proudly, might I add.

Except for Mary Poppins I’ve seen all of the shows Disney has put on Broadway. All of them magical and unforgettable in their own way. Saturday night my cousins and I went to see Aladdin and OH. MY. GOD. WHAT. A. SHOW.

We started out at Casa Nonna for dinner (great food – totally recommend the eggplant parmigiana, the fried calamari, and the fries potato croquettes with the garlic aioli) and then headed off for the theater. As our luck would have it, it started to pour after we took not three steps out of the restaurant. Of course. So we hoofed it the three-ish blocks. In the rain. Through the crowds. On a strict timeline.

We finally get to the theater and have our tickets checked. The show was at The New Amsterdam Theater which was completely restored by Disney and it was beautiful. We were running short on time but if you get a chance to go to see this show, get there a little early to experience the beauty of it. We get to our seats and it’s no surprise that there is almost no leg room. I never understood how all of these theaters are being redone and no one thinks to take out maybe one row of seats to make just a little more room. Also, the theater is in an odd spot, stuck between Madame Tussauds and McDonalds on 42nd Street. When in New York, I guess Moving on…

the excitement is mounting

Please turn off your cellphones or any other electronic devices. Also, please remember that the taking of photos or videos is strictly prohibited.

To say this show hit the ground running is an understatement.  It was non-stop from Arabian Nights all the way to the cherry on the top of the first half’s sundae, Friend Like Me.  I mean, there were fireworks. Fireworks – real, fake, who cares? They were magical. Also, there were streamers. Nice touch, Prince Ali. The sets were beautiful. Everything was covered in glitter, sequins, rhinestones – if it sparkled or shined, it was on the stage. I wanted to live in Agrabah because as we all know, glitter is my favorite color.

Let me just quickly note that some of the story line/characters were changed to make it work for the Broadway stage. Understandably, the animal friends that we all know and love were absent from the live action performance. Raja was totally eliminated. It was a bit of a let down because Abu was swapped out for Aladdin’s posse of thieves, who can be found in the original version of the story, so it made it difficult to miss him too much. The only way they could have gotten a better human replacement for Iago was if they brought in Gilbert Godfried to reprise his role. On a related note, they did get Jonathan Freeman to reprise his role as Jafar. Surreal. He didn’t even break character for his curtain call.

The man who plays the Genie is up for a Tony award and let me tell you if he doesn’t win it, there is no justice in this world. He was AMAZING. He stole every scene he was in (and everyone was after Aladdin for stealing a loaf of bread – go figure). I wish I had half of his energy, stamina and talent.

After intermission, Aladdin and Jasmine hopped aboard their magic carpet and flew to A Whole New World. Now, personally I did not see any wires holding up the carpet. My cousins will disagree with me but hello, MAGIC carpet. just saying.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end.  The curtain fell and the lights came on so it was time to go. We fought the crowds and finally got outside. We were so excited that it wasn’t raining! The words “It’s a beautiful night!” didn’t even get out of my cousin Desiree’s mouth when it started to pour. Thanks, Dez. I had to restrain myself from screaming “MAKE WAY FOR PRINCE ALI”. Ok, fine I might have mumbled it a couple of times. Mumble meaning said out loud in a not so quiet voice.

Saturday will go down as one of the best cousin nights we’ve had in a long time. The show was unforgettable. The laughs were unstoppable and the memories were unreplaceable. (I was going for a theme here – deal with it.)

Speaking of those unreplaceable memories, when we were stuck in 9th Ave traffic, Desiree decided she wanted a little sweet. We found a Dunkin Donuts that had the audacity to be closed. how rude! Fortunately, we pulled up next to a waffle truck. Before we knew it, Desi was half out the window trying to score some waffles. God, I wish I got it on video. The driver was able to give her one of those loyalty cards through the window. This must have satisfied Dez because the next thing we heard was “WAFFLE OUT!”, she came back into the car and rolled up the window with a huge smile on her face. WHY DIDN’T I GET IT ON VIDEO??
